Top things to do in Austin — week of April 27
A loaded Austin week — Mohawk has a Saturday booking I would not skip, Capital Factory has a free founder happy hour, and Cosmic Coffee opens late on Thursday.
Late April in Austin and the calendar is busy without being SXSW-busy, which is the right amount of busy. The terraces are open, Mohawk has a Saturday booking I would not move, and Capital Factory is doing the Wednesday founder happy hour that has quietly become the best free networking in town.
If you want the calendar straight, the Austin this-week page has all of these listed already.
Monday: a slow one at Easy Tiger
Easy Tiger on East 6th has a Monday taco-and-beer special — $14 for a flight and three tacos. Easy start to the week, the patio is open, and you are home by 10. The chorizo is the call.
Tuesday: free book reading at BookPeople
BookPeople on North Lamar is doing a Tuesday evening reading from a writer whose new novel got a long FT review last month. Free, the room holds about fifty, the Q&A is always the better half. Show up at 6:30 to get a seat.
Wednesday: Capital Factory founder happy hour
The headline midweek thing. Two short talks — one on seed-stage fundraising in the current market, one on AI infra costs — then a Q&A and a beer fridge. Free with RSVP, the crowd skews seed and pre-seed, and the room will have a couple of Austin VCs floating around. The Anthropic team has a small Austin presence now and a couple of folks usually show up.
Thursday: Cosmic Coffee late
Cosmic on South Lamar is now open until 11 on Thursdays, which is genuinely a small revolution for the area. The pizza pop-up out back is the best $14 dinner south of the river, and the patio is open until 10:30 if it is dry. Bring a sweater, the wind picks up by 9.
Friday: a quiet dinner
I am leaving Friday off the headline list. Eat somewhere small — Suerte if you can book, Birdie's if you cannot, Loro for the splurge — and save the legs for Saturday. Pretty straightforward.
Saturday: Mohawk
The big one. $22 advance, doors at 8, a line-up that has no business being on this size of stage. The cloakroom is now $4, not $3 like the website says. The upstairs bar is quieter if you want a chat between sets.
If you cannot get into Mohawk, the Parish is doing a Saturday for $18 with a smaller line-up that has been quietly excellent for a month.
Sunday: a long brunch and a Zilker walk
Sunday brunch at Veracruz All Natural, then a long walk through Zilker Park, then a beer at Cosmic Coffee on the way home. Zilker is the right kind of busy on a dry Sunday and the food trucks at the south end are open until 6.
A reminder that the free Austin meetups list has a Tuesday lunch I keep forgetting to mention. Free pizza, free coffee, a lot of decent people.
Saturday at Mohawk and Wednesday at Capital Factory are the two I would book first. Thursday at Cosmic if you want a slow one. Sunday at Zilker is non-negotiable if it is dry. Wild that the next big tech week in Austin is not until June, the rest of May is going to feel calm.
