Austin BBQ and live music: the best nights to combine them in 2026

A practical guide to combining proper Austin BBQ with a live music night in 2026 — which BBQ joint pairs with which venue, where the timing actually works, and what to skip.

Priya ShahPriya Shah·4 April 2026·6 min read·Austin

Right. Austin in 2026. The food scene is in great shape, the music venue calendar is properly back to 2019 levels, and the trick to having a great Austin day is combining the two — a proper BBQ lunch followed by a live music night with enough time in between to digest.

I have been writing about Austin food and music for four years and the question I get asked most by visiting friends is "where do we eat and where do we go after." Here is the answer. Pairings, timing, and what to skip.

The Austin BBQ rhythm, briefly

Austin BBQ is a lunch culture. The classic places — Franklin, La Barbecue, Terry Black's — open around 11am and close when they run out of meat, often before 2pm. If you want the proper BBQ experience you are eating at noon, not at 7pm.

That changes the day shape. BBQ at noon, music at 9pm, with a long afternoon in between for walking it off, taking a nap, going to a museum, or — the local move — drinking something cold by the lake. The live music venues in Austin do not really open till 8pm anyway, so the timing works.

A few newer BBQ places do dinner — listed below. But the classic format is lunch.

The BBQ + music pairings

Franklin Barbecue + Mohawk

The classic pairing. Franklin BBQ is on East 11th, line up at 9:30am for a noon meat (yes, properly), eat at noon, walk it off east toward downtown. Mohawk is on Red River and has the best live music programming on a typical week — touring indie and rock acts plus residency nights.

The match works because Franklin is a once-in-a-trip experience and Mohawk is a once-in-a-trip experience, and putting them on the same day gives you the Austin highlights reel. $30-45 per person at Franklin, $15-35 cover at Mohawk depending on the act.

La Barbecue + Continental Club

The locals' move. La Barbecue is the BBQ that real Austinites recommend over Franklin — same quality of meat, much shorter line. East side location, eat at noon-1pm, head to South Congress in the evening for the Continental Club.

Continental Club is the proper old-Austin music venue — country, blues, soul, rockabilly. The 6:30 happy hour set is free and is consistently one of the best music sets in Austin all week. Properly. The 9pm headline set is $10-15.

This is the pairing if you want to feel like you have actually been in Austin rather than visiting a tourist version of it.

Terry Black's + Stubb's

Downtown logistics. Terry Black's is on Barton Springs (the original location, not the cheaper-of-the-two), Stubb's is on Red River. Walking distance, lunch at noon-1pm, evening at Stubb's for whatever is on.

Stubb's outdoor amphitheater is the best mid-sized music venue in Texas. The shows are typically $30-50. The Stubb's BBQ next door is fine but skip it for the actual Terry Black's pairing — the meat at Black's is on a different level.

KG BBQ + Antone's

For something a little different. KG BBQ is a Black-owned BBQ place on the east side that has been getting properly deserved attention over the last two years. The brisket is excellent and the line is much shorter than the famous places. Antone's is the legendary blues club — moved location a few years back but the programming is still the soul of Austin blues.

Eat at noon, evening at Antone's for whatever blues act is on. Cover is usually $15-25.

Goldee's BBQ + Hotel Vegas

Goldee's is a drive — it's actually in Fort Worth, technically — but if you have a car and the day is open, it is genuinely the best BBQ in Texas right now and worth the trip. Drive back in time for a Hotel Vegas night. Hotel Vegas in East Austin is the best small venue in the city — gritty, garage-rock leaning, the kind of place where you discover bands you will follow for years.

This is the all-day pairing if you have a car and a willingness to drive 90 minutes each way.

A proper Austin BBQ + music day, in order

If you are visiting and have one day to do this:

9:30am: line up at La Barbecue. (Or Franklin if you want the marquee experience.)

12:00pm: eat. Order at least: brisket, sausage, pulled pork. Plus pickles and white bread. Skip the sides if you do not have stomach space — the meat is the point.

1:30pm: walk it off. East 11th has decent coffee shops. Sip a cold drink, do not eat anything else for two hours.

3:00pm: Barton Springs Pool. Cold spring-fed pool, $9 entry, the best afternoon recovery activity in the city.

5:30pm: shower, change, head out. Continental Club happy hour at 6:30 is free.

8:30pm: dinner if you can face it. Most BBQ-stretched stomachs cannot. A taco at Veracruz All Natural fits the bill if you need something.

9:30pm: main music event. Mohawk, Stubb's, Antone's, or Hotel Vegas depending on what is on.

12:00am: late food. Whataburger drive-through is the Austin closer. Or a slice at Home Slice on South Congress if you are walking.

What to skip

Stubb's BBQ for the food. The music venue is great, the BBQ is fine but Austin has a dozen better.

The chain Texas BBQ places. They are fine but the city is full of properly excellent independent BBQ — there is no reason to settle.

Sixth Street for music. The clubs there are mostly cover-band tourist traps. The proper Austin music scene is on Red River, South Congress, and the East Side. Untill you know the city, do not let "Sixth Street is the music street" guide you — it is the bachelorette party street.

Practical bits

Lines: Franklin requires a 9:30am line for a noon meat. Truth Barbeque (a newer arrival) is similar. La Barbecue, Terry Black's, KG BBQ have manageable lines mid-week — show up by 11:30 and you will be eating by 12:30.

Reservations: most BBQ joints do not take reservations. Some do online ordering for pickup which is a useful hack if you want to skip the line — Goldee's, La Barbecue have this.

Parking: most music venues have minimal parking. Use rideshare, especially after eating BBQ which is the wrong meal to drive home with. Austin's rideshare is reasonably priced after 9pm.

Cover charges: cash is sometimes still required at the smaller venues. Bring $40 cash even if you plan to pay by card.

Quick picks

If you have one BBQ + music day: La Barbecue + Continental Club happy hour + main act. If you want the marquee: Franklin + Mohawk. If you want a different angle: KG BBQ + Antone's.

I keep an Austin events page on Rifio that pulls in venue listings, BBQ pop-ups, food festivals and the smaller East Side music programming. The pop-ups are where the most interesting things happen and the venue sites alone do not catch them. Worth a save for trip planning.

One last thing

Austin BBQ is a religion and people argue about the rankings. The honest answer is the top tier is roughly equivalent — Franklin, La Barbecue, Terry Black's, Goldee's are all genuinely great, and the difference between them is smaller than the marketing suggests. Pick the one that fits the day. The line is the cost. The meat is the prize.

FAQ

Is BBQ really worth a 90-minute line?
For Franklin yes, once. For Terry Black's no — it's good, but the line is shorter at off-peak. Most other places in this guide have minimal lines on weeknights.
Can I do dinner BBQ?
Mostly no. Austin BBQ is a lunch culture — Franklin closes when the meat runs out (often by 2pm). Some newer places do dinner, listed below.
Music venue cover charges?
Range from free (Continental Club happy hour) to $35-50 for a touring headliner at Mohawk or Stubb's.
