Google's King's Cross HQ — meetups, talks and bars nearby
A neighbourhood guide to AI and tech events within ten minutes of Google's King's Cross office, with realistic walk-from-tube notes.
Google's UK headquarters at King's Cross has been there long enough that the neighbourhood has reorganised around it. The Pancras Square cluster, the new public realm bits, the Coal Drops Yard food, all of it. Whether you love or hate that change, the upside is that there is now a genuinely thick layer of tech meetups within a ten-minute walk.
I keep a running view of AI events in London for this exact reason — King's Cross is one of the few neighbourhoods where you can credibly walk to three different events in one evening.
Inside the bubble
The Conduit, 6 Langley Street → 18 minutes' walk, or two stops on the Piccadilly. Slightly cheating because it is Covent Garden, but the AI Tuesdays evenings draw a lot of the King's Cross crowd post-work. Free, RSVP via Luma.
Central Saint Martins. Public talks on design, AI and ethics run frequently. Usually free, sometimes ticketed, listed on the UAL events page. Good for the design-meets-AI angle that the pure-engineering events miss.
The Crick Institute. Public events on biology, medicine and the AI overlap. Not weekly but consistently interesting. Worth following if you care about the bio side.
Pubs and casual
The Lighterman, Granary Square. The default "we said let's grab a drink after work" venue. You will see lanyards. Outside seating in summer is mental.
Dishoom King's Cross. Not an event venue but is an overflow venue for half the meetups in the area. Book or queue.
The Standard hotel. Rooftop bar gets used for the more polished events — invite-only stuff for venture funds and the like. Not somewhere you walk into casually.
Slightly further afield
A ten-minute walk south gets you to Bloomsbury and the UCL events scene — a lot of which is publicly listed and free. UCL Computer Science and the Alan Turing Institute (which is at the British Library, basically next door) both run public lectures that are worth tracking. The Turing Institute's programme is excellent and underrated.
A bit further west, Fitzrovia has a smaller but solid meetup scene. Not specifically AI but plenty of product, design and engineering crossover. The walk takes seven minutes from the Google end.
The honest neighbourhood take
King's Cross has the highest concentration of "we are doing a panel about AI" events in London right now. Some of them are great. Many are not. The pattern that works for me:
- If the speaker list has a named senior engineer or researcher, go.
- If the speaker list is "to be announced" three days before, skip.
- If the venue is Pancras Square ground floor and the food is catered, the Q&A will be polite and the substance thin. Go for the networking, not the talks.
- The free Luma events with three speakers and a small room consistently beat the £40 ticketed ones with five speakers and a sponsor banner.
I have made every mistake on this list, including paying £45 for a panel on "the future of generative AI" where the future of generative AI was, definately, not discussed.
Walking radius cheat sheet
- 5 mins: Pancras Square, Granary Square, Coal Drops Yard, the Lighterman.
- 10 mins: Conduit (cheating), British Library, Turing Institute, Bloomsbury edge.
- 15 mins: Old Street eastward, Fitzrovia westward, UCL main campus.
That is most of central London tech, honestly.
Where to look
- The London this-week roundup is the easiest single page.
- For the AI-only filter, AI events in London.
- Luma's King's Cross filter does not really work — Rifio's neighbourhood filter is better, but I am biased.
Anyway. The food in Coal Drops Yard alone is worth the trip, the meetups are a bonus.
FAQ
- Where exactly is Google's King's Cross office?
- Google's UK headquarters is at King's Cross, on Pancras Square next to the station — publicly known and signposted.
- Are these all AI events?
- No. Mix of AI, general tech, design and startup. Filter by tag on Rifio if you only want one kind.

The Lighterman is exactly where everyone ends up. Half my friend group I met queueing for a beer there.

Turing Institute lectures are seriously underrated. Free and the speakers are top tier.

Hard agree on the £40 ticket panels being thin. The free Luma ones are usually better.

Coal Drops Yard food is mental in summer, can confirm.

Saint Martins talks slot — useful tip, did not know they ran public ones.

Dishoom as overflow venue is so accurate. The 7pm pre-meetup queue is a vibe.

Found three of these via the rifio search filter, neighbourhood thing actually works.

The Standard rooftop is invite-only for the good stuff but the regular bar is fine and has a view.

UCL CS public lectures are also great. The link to AI events page would benefit from a UCL filter.
