The 9 best AI hackathons in the UK in 2026
Kate Fletcher ranks the 9 UK AI hackathons actually worth a weekend in 2026 — real prizes, working sponsors, and the events that ship hires not slide decks.
The UK AI hackathon scene in 2026 is in better shape than it's been since 2019. The big three London universities are running cross-uni hacks again, the corporate-sponsored events are properly resourced, and the regional scene (Cambridge, Oxford, Manchester, Edinburgh, Bristol) has actually shown up. Here's the nine I'd genuinely block a weekend for.
For the live calendar, the UK events page has the cleanest feed.
The London top tier
AI Tinkerers London Hackathon is the spine of the technical AI hackathon scene. Sponsors actually show up — engineers from the major AI labs have been mentors at recent events. Prizes get spent on the project. The application bar is real but not absurd.
AI House Demo Day Hackathon runs around the AI House demo cycles. The format is 48 hours of building tied to a real follow-up if you win — actual fund intros, not a £200 Amazon voucher. Apply early.
Imperial / UCL / KCL crossover hacks open to non-students for some tracks. Technical bar is high. Less of a "demo your slide deck" feel than the corporate ones — more "build the thing." Watch their Discord channels for application windows.
Bloomberg AI Open Source Hackathon is the best-resourced corporate event. Open-source-AI focused, food is genuinly good (rare!), and the mentors are working engineers rather than the typical "we got a director from analytics to wander through."
The Oxbridge picks
Cambridge AI Hack is the strongest research-tinged AI hackathon outside London. PhDs and undergrads in equal measure. The briefs lean toward genuinely hard problems — interpretability, multi-agent systems, RAG-on-scientific-data. The mentor pool is excellent.
Oxford AI Society Hackathon is annual, well-resourced, and cross-disciplinary. Medical AI and climate AI tracks have been particularly strong recent years. Less hype than London events, more substance.
The regional picks
Manchester AI Hackathon is the biggest North-of-England event. Bruntwood-sponsored, real prizes, mentor pool from the growing Manchester AI scene. Worth the train.
Edinburgh AI Hackathon is University of Edinburgh-led with a strong NLP focus, given the local research community. Underrated and the bar to apply is lower than the Oxbridge equivalents.
Bristol AI Hack is smaller and growing. The local AI scene is real (Graphcore alumni, Five.ai folks, the AI safety crowd). Less prize-heavy, more substantive briefs.
How to actually do an AI hackathon weekend
A few rules that I wish someone had told me:
- Form a team before the event. The pre-event Discord is the move. Show up with a problem statement and the team finds you.
- Pick a clear, narrow problem. "Build something with LLMs" loses every time. "Build a tool that does X for Y users" wins.
- Build the demo by Saturday lunch. The teams that wait until Sunday morning to wire up the demo always lose. Always.
- Skip the keynote. Most are filler. The mentor sessions and office hours are where the value is.
- Eat real food. The 2am pizza is the path to a project that doesn't ship. Walk to a takeaway, eat for twenty minutes, come back.
What I've left off
A handful of "AI hackathons" that are actually pitch competitions, accelerator info days, or sponsor events with no building. Skip the ones where the schedule has more "panel discussions" than "build time." Real hackathons have one hour of welcome talks and forty-seven hours of building. Anything else is a conference in a cheap costume.
The discovery problem
Finding these events is genuinely the hardest part. Devpost has half. Eventbrite has another quarter. The university Discord channels and Twitter accounts have the rest. I lost a whole Saturday last year trying to map them all. This is honestly why the UK events page on Rifio aggregates them — saves you that Saturday.
Pick one of the nine above. Block the weekend. Don't pitch the venture team. Build the thing.

FAQ
- Are UK AI hackathons mostly in London?
- Most, yes. But Cambridge, Oxford, Manchester and Edinburgh have a small but real circuit, and Bristol has been growing.
- Is the prize money real?
- At the top five on this list, yes. Real cash, real cloud credits, real introductions. At the others, more nominal.
- Do I need to be a researcher?
- No. Most are builder-flavoured. AI Tinkerers and Bloomberg are the most engineer-heavy; the university crossovers skew technical-undergrad.
