London running clubs that aren't too serious, 2026
Tom Bradley ranks London's best running clubs for people who want a 5k pace and a pub afterwards — Track Mafia, Midnight Runners, Goodgym, Run Dem Crew, the Saturday parkruns and more.
Right. London running has properly democratised. Five years ago "running club" meant turn up at 6am in lycra and run sub-7-minute miles or feel embarrassed. Now there's a club for every pace, and most of the best ones genuinly don't care how fast you are. Six worth joining.
Midnight Runners
The biggest and the friendliest. Multiple meets across London weekly — Borough, Hackney, Notting Hill, etc — and a global network if you ever travel. Format is: turn up, captain runs at the front with a backpack speaker, the group runs together, every five minutes you stop for press-ups or burpees, the pub at the end is part of the night.
It's genuinly the best entry to London running culture. Free. Just turn up.
Run Dem Crew
Shoreditch institution, started by Charlie Dark in 2007. Tuesday nights, multiple pace pens (Cheetahs are fast, Lemurs are mid, Dolphins are the friendly back), proper community culture. The crew has produced more London Marathon runners than is strictly reasonable. Inclusive in a way that isn't just talk.
If you're vaguely east-London-based, this is your club.
Goodgym
The clever one. You run to a community task — could be clearing a park, painting a community centre, dropping food off to an older neighbour — do the task, then run home. Combines the run with something genuinly useful. Multiple sessions weekly across boroughs.
If "going for a run" feels self-indulgent and you want it to do something, Goodgym is the answer.
Saturday parkrun
The London weekly standard. 5k, free, 9am Saturday, every park (over 60 in London proper). Bushy Park is the original and the biggest. Hampstead Heath is the toughest. Burgess Park is the flattest. Print your barcode once and run any course you fancy.
If you do nothing else on this list, do parkrun. The weekly rhythm holds up your year in a way nothing else does.
Track Mafia
Battersea Park track. More serious — the sessions are actual track sessions and the pace is real — but the club is famously welcoming and they have proper coached groups for every pace. £20-ish a month for the track hire, two sessions a week. The Mile is the entry test, you don't need to be fast to start.
London Frontrunners
LGBTQ+ running club, Regent's Park. Multiple weekly meets, mixed-pace, the Saturday morning session is the warmest and most social. Free, just turn up. Welcoming in the proper sense.
What you don't need
A few things people overthink:
- You don't need fancy kit. Trainers (any), shorts, a t-shirt. The kit chat is for people who don't actually run.
- You don't need to be fast. Every club above has a back pen. The captain stays with you.
- You don't need to commit weekly. Drop in once a fortnight, nobody minds.
- You don't need a Strava account. You can have one without becoming insufferable.
What I'd skip
The £15-a-session "boutique running studio" things in W1 — the indoor treadmill class is fine if that's your thing but it isn't a running club, it's a gym class, and you'll meet zero new people. Pay-per-session "run-and-yoga retreat" weekends — the price is genuinly mental and the running is alot of pretty pictures by the canal.

- Do I need to be fast?
- For Run Dem Crew and Track Mafia: a comfortable 10k is helpful. For Midnight Runners, Goodgym, parkrun: no. They have proper beginner-friendly groups.
- Are they all free?
- Most are free. Track Mafia track sessions have a small subs fee for the track hire. Parkrun is always free.
