The 8 best stand-up open mics in London

Tom Bradley ranks the 8 best London stand-up open mics in 2026 — where to watch, where to book a try-out spot, and which rooms not to bother with.

Tom BradleyTom Bradley·21 April 2026·3 min read·London

Right. Open mics. The London new-act circuit is the best pipeline in UK comedy and it's also, for any new comic, mostly a slog of bringer-gigs in pub upstairs rooms with five other acts and zero audience. The eight rooms below are the ones worth your time — either because the room is real, the booker is real, or the gigs that come out of it are real.

Useful both ways: if you're new and trying to get on stage, this is where to apply. If you're a punter, this is where to watch the next generation work it out before they show up on telly.

The top of the table

Angel Comedy at the Bill Murray is one. The Tuesday open-spot night specifically — five-minute slots, real audience (the venue's a proper pub with proper punters), and the bookers reading emails properly. Half the names you watch on the paid weekend shows started in the Tuesday try-out night here. Email the booker a week or two ahead with a brief CV and any club credits.

King Gong at the Comedy Store is the other end of the scale. Last Monday of the month. The audience is given red cards and they raise them when they've had enough; once three cards are up, the gong goes and you're off. It is, without exaggeration, the toughest open mic in the country. Watch a few first. Audition later. £15 entry to watch is genuinly worth it as a comedy fan.

The properly-run new-act rooms

Top Secret Comedy Club new act night is the best-run new-act room in central London after Angel. Properly real audience, the booker actually books spots into the paid weekend bills if you do well. Email list — get on it three or four months ahead.

Aaaaaargh! at the Cavendish Arms in Stockwell has been the South London new-material institution for years. Friendly, the room's nicely lit, the booker is a comic who knows the grind. Best place to fail safely while you're working out a five-minute set.

The smaller, weirder picks

The Boat Show is on a literal boat moored in Soho. Cabaret-bar format, the room is small enough that the audience came to listen rather than catch a tube home. Try-outs work here — book early. Ace open mic at the Camden Head runs Wednesdays, mix of new and circuit acts trying material, decent vibes.

Knock2Bag new-act competition is annual, heats run April-June, real prizes, real industry watching. Even the heats have audiences and judges who matter. Auditions through their site.

The Chuckle Club in the LSE student union is the budget pick — inconsistent, cheap, but the warm-up acts get to do five-spots which is more stage time than most rooms offer at this level. Useful if you're grinding for stage hours.

How to actually book a spot

A few things that work in 2026:

  • Email, don't DM. Bookers want a name, your credits, a video link, and one short paragraph. Not a pitch.
  • Stay on the list politely. Booker not getting back? Wait three weeks, send a one-line follow-up. Don't spam.
  • Accept the bringer ones for the first six months. Even if you're not into them, they get you stage time. Then drop them.
  • Watch first. Don't book a spot at a room you haven't watched. Definately don't turn up cold to King Gong.

For everything actually on tonight (open mics, paid shows, previews), the London comedy answers page is the cleanest single feed. Filter by venue, sort by date, see what's on.

What I've left off

Most of the bringer-gig pub nights advertised on the new-act forums. Five acts, no audience, you brought three friends, you paid for the privilege. Skip them — they don't make you funnier, they make you tired. The eight above are worth the email.

Get on stage. Eat the bombs. Come back next week. That's the whole job.
