The 8 best rooftop bars in London that are actually good in 2026
Kate Fletcher ranks the 8 London rooftop bars that are still genuinely good in 2026 — proper drinks, real views, no £24 espresso martinis served by influencers.
Right. London rooftop bars, 2026, the honest version. Half the rooftops in this city tipped into "£24 espresso martini served by an influencer" territory in 2024 and they've never come back. The ones on this list are still doing the actual work — proper drinks, real views, prices that aren't insulting.
The single most important rule of London rooftops: any rooftop bar that has its own social media manager is now a tourist trap. The genuinely good ones are mostly hotel-tops, council-block-tops, and converted-car-park-tops. The branded "experiential" rooftops with the queue and the dress code are bait, avoid.
The hotel-top tier
Aviary at the top of the Montcalm at Old Street is the best of the hotel rooftops. You get the City skyline on one side and the Shoreditch low-rise on the other, the bartenders are actual bartenders rather than mixologists, and the prices are reasonable for the altitude (£14-16 cocktails). Friday after-work is busy, Tuesday is empty, both work.
Madison at One New Change is St Paul's eye-level and somehow still under-the-radar despite being right next to the cathedral. The Friday after-work crowd from the City fills the place but Sunday afternoon is gorgeous and quiet. £14-16, walk-in is fine pre-7pm.
Aqua Shard is expensive (£16-22 cocktails) and touristy, and it's still on this list because the view is unmatched and the bar staff are seriously good. Book it once for the view, expense it, don't make it a habit.
The car-park-top tier (the actual best)
Frank's Café in Peckham is the best London rooftop, full stop, and I will defend that take. Top of a multi-storey car park in Peckham, summer pop-up only (June-September), drinks are £8-12, view of the City skyline is panoramic. You queue, you sit on a paint-bucket-chair, you watch the sun go down over Peckham, you don't want to leave. The whole thing costs about a third of a Sky Garden visit and is ten times better.
Bussey Rooftop Bar is on a different car park 200 metres from Frank's and it's the bigger, louder, later version. Drinks are cheaper (£8-10), the music is louder, the crowd skews younger. Best as the second venue after Frank's when Frank's closes at 11.
Roof East in Stratford is the East London answer to the Peckham rooftops. Multi-storey car park, summer pop-up, includes proper crazy golf and outdoor cinema. Drinks are reasonable, the food is decent street food, and the whole thing has a stupid-fun energy the City rooftops can't touch.
The proper-rooftop tier
The Culpeper in Aldgate East is the under-the-radar move. Four-storey pub with a proper greenhouse rooftop on top — herbs growing everywhere, good cocktails, decent food, smaller crowd than the City rooftops because nobody knows it's up there. Walk-in, ££, summer evenings are the move.
Skylight Tobacco Dock in Wapping is three rooftop courts with bocce, croquet, and bar service. Summer-Saturday afternoon energy with a sunset view across the Docks. Cheap drinks, mixed crowd. Closes through winter.
What I've left off
Sky Garden — the view is unreal but the bar is a tourist queue and the drinks are joyless. Free entry is its only saving grace and you can't book a drink table easily. Treat it as a viewing platform, not a bar.
Galvin at Windows — was great, has tipped. Drinks have crept to £22 and the staff are tired.
Mr Fogg's rooftop, Searcys St Pancras Champagne Bar at the rooftop level, anything labelled "secret garden rooftop" — all roughly the same energy and all bad. The "elevated" / "experiential" thing has run its course.
Coq d'Argent — fine but the energy is corporate-Christmas-party every night and the drinks are mid.
Radio at Ten Trinity Square — used to be one of my favourites, has aged poorly. Service has lost the plot.
How I'd actually plan rooftops in 2026
Summer (May-September): Frank's Café > Bussey > Roof East > Skylight, in that order. Cheap, fun, view-quality unmatched.
Year-round (hotel tops): Aviary > Madison > Aqua Shard. The first two for actual evenings, the third for the special-occasion view.
Mid-evening (post-pub, pre-club): The Culpeper for atmosphere, Bussey for energy.
For finding the summer pop-ups specifically (the calendar is different every year and most of them are walk-in, so you need to know they exist), the London this-week page is the easiest way to see what's open and where. Most of the rooftop pop-ups don't advertise much beyond their own instagram, you have to go looking.
What I haven't mentioned
Members' clubs with rooftops (Soho House Greek Street, Shoreditch House) — fine if you're a member, irrelevant if not, not putting them on a public list. Hotel rooftops outside the central zones (the Montcalm Bermondsey, the Hoxton Holborn) — fine for guests, not destinations otherwise. The Vista at the Trafalgar — fine view, drinks are mid. The rooftop at the Eden Locke — too small and too booked.
You'll be fine. Pick the Peckham one in summer, the Aviary year-round, occasionally splash on Aqua Shard. That's the rotation.

FAQ
- Are London rooftops worth it in 2026?
- Some are. Most have tipped into £24-cocktail tourist territory. The ones on this list are still doing the actual work.
- Do I need to book?
- Most yes for Friday-Saturday evenings. Sunday-Tuesday almost everything is walk-in.
- What's the best skyline view?
- Sky Garden for the panorama, but the bar bit is a tourist queue. Aviary at the top of the Montcalm has a quieter version of the same view.
