The 10 best first-date spots in Soho for 2026

Kate Fletcher ranks the 10 first-date spots in Soho that actually work in 2026 — proper drinks, room to talk, exits if it tanks, no £22 negronis served by the rude.

Kate FletcherKate Fletcher·12 March 2026·3 min read·London

Right. Soho first dates. The brief: somewhere you can actually hear the other person, somewhere with drinks that aren't £22 and resentful, somewhere with three other options within a four-minute walk if you need to bail or extend.

Soho still works for this in 2026 even though half of it has turned into chain steakhouses and members' clubs. You just need to know which streets to stick to. Old Compton, Dean, Lexington, Brewer, Archer — those five streets are where the proper bars live.

The walk-in tier

Bar Termini is the move when you want to look like you know what you're doing without trying. Eighteen seats, an espresso martini that genuinly nobody else in London does properly, and the tiny room means you're forced into actual conversation rather than shouting over house music. If it's full when you arrive, the standing tables out back work fine for one drink.

The French House is for the early date — pre-dinner, halves of beer, no phones allowed. It's a London institution with the rules to match, and your date either gets it or doesn't, which is useful information. Don't try to make it a whole-night place, it gets too rammed.

Quo Vadis has a separate bar room from the dining room and almost nobody mentions it. Counter seats, decent martinis, the kind of staff who don't hover. Walk in any night before 7.30.

The book-it tier

Swift is two bars in one building. Upstairs is light, oysters, martinis, conversation. Downstairs is whisky and lower lighting. Pick based on the date energy. Both rooms are first-date-shaped — neither is too loud, neither is too dead.

Andrew Edmunds if you want to skip dinner-then-drinks and combine them. Candlelight, two floors of Georgian townhouse, a wine list with actual depth. Three weeks ahead for a Friday, but a Tuesday is much easier and the room is identical.

Sketch is a tourist trap if you go to the pink Gallery room. Don't. The Glade is the one — fairy lights, low seats, drinks aren't cheap but the room does the work for you.

The dinner-disguised-as-drinks tier

The smart play in Soho is small-plates-at-the-bar so you can ratchet up or down. Polpo on Beak Street is the most reliable — cicchetti at the counter, two glasses of wine, decision point at the 45-minute mark. Bocca di Lupo is one notch posher and you have to book the counter specifically (it's six seats). Milk Beach is the daytime version, which alot of people forget Soho even has — bright, breakfast-y, and you can pair it with the Curzon over the road.

The under-the-radar one

Mark's Bar under Hix on Brewer Street is empty Sunday through Tuesday and that's the entire reason it works. Leather banquettes, low lighting, walk-in seats, and the bartenders make a proper drink without the performance. Saturday it's grim, the rest of the week it's a secret.

How I'd actually plan it

Start at a walk-in (Termini, French House, Quo Vadis, Mark's) so you're not pinned to a 7pm booking if it's going badly. If it's working, walk five minutes to a second venue. If it's not, Tottenham Court Road tube is right there. The whole point of Soho is the density, use it.

For pairing with something to do after — a late film at Prince Charles Cinema, a comedy show at Soho Theatre, a gig at the 100 Club — the London this-week page is the fastest way to find something walkable.

What I've left off

The Box Soho, Cahoots, Mr Fogg's anything — fine, but they're bachelorette-party places, not first-date places. Hard pass. Tonight Josephine, same energy, same answer. Soho House is members only and if you're bringing a first date there you're trying too hard.

Ten spots, four-minute walks between most of them, you'll be fine.

  1. 1

    Bar Termini

    Old Compton Street · ££ · walk-in

Tiny Italian counter, 18 seats, espresso martinis are the best in London. Stand-up tables out back if it's rammed.

  2. 2

    Swift

    Old Compton Street · ££ · book

Upstairs is martinis and oysters, downstairs is whisky. Pick your weapon. Conversation lighting.

  3. 3

    The French House

    Dean Street · £ · walk-in

No mobile phones policy, no pints (halves only), proper Soho institution. Pre-dinner only — gets mental after 8.

  4. 4

    Quo Vadis bar

    Dean Street · ££ · walk-in

The bar bit (not the dining room) is one of the most underrated date rooms in Soho. Always seats at the counter.

  5. 5

    Sketch — Glade

    Conduit Street · £££ · book

Skip the pink room (overdone). The Glade is fairy-grotto-but-good and your date will remember it.

  6. 6

    Andrew Edmunds

    Lexington Street · £££ · book

Candlelight, Georgian townhouse, wine list deep enough to actually mean something. Books out three weeks ahead.

  7. 7

    Polpo

    Beak Street · ££ · book

Cicchetti and a small-plates format means you can stop after one round if it's not working. Underrated tactical move.

  8. 8

    Milk Beach Soho

    Marshall Street · ££ · book

Australian, sunlit, day-date energy. Pair with a film at the Curzon over the road.

  9. 9

    Mark's Bar (Hix)

    Brewer Street · ££ · walk-in

Underground, leather banquettes, drinks made by people who don't do flair. Always seats Sun-Tues.

  10. 10

    Bocca di Lupo bar counter

Archer Street · ££ · book counter only

Sit at the counter, watch the kitchen, share three plates. The least awkward small-plates date in Soho.

FAQ

Is Soho still good for first dates in 2026?
Yes, mostly. The density of bars within a five-minute walk is unmatched, and the late-night infrastructure means you're not stuck if it goes long.
Should I book?
Friday and Saturday after 7pm — yes, always. Weeknights before 6.30 you can mostly walk in.
What if I'm skint?
Bar Termini espresso martini is £11 and the room's tiny enough to feel like an event. Cheaper than three pubs.

Bar Termini is the right answer. The Marsala Martini is genuinely better than the espresso one, fight me.

  • Mateo G.·13 Mar 2026

Andrew Edmunds is so good and so hard to book. Pro tip: walk in 10 mins before they open and beg.

  • Lottie F.·13 Mar 2026

The French House no-phones rule is the best filter. Either your date enjoys talking or they don't.

  • Khaled J.·13 Mar 2026

Mark's Bar Sunday-Tuesday is the best-kept secret in Soho, please don't put it on a list, oh wait

  • Yara N.·14 Mar 2026

Polpo bar counter is the move, you can leave after 45 mins without it being a thing

  • Greg S.·14 Mar 2026

Sketch Glade is so much better than the pink one and people still queue for the pink one. Madness.

  • Effie M.·14 Mar 2026

Quo Vadis bar is criminally underrated, I had three first dates there last year and two became something

  • Ben H.·14 Mar 2026

found this via rifio btw, the search actually surfaces decent stuff in Soho not just tourist traps

  • Saskia P.·15 Mar 2026

Milk Beach is genuinely the best daytime first date spot in zone 1, sunlight does the work

  • Niall O.·15 Mar 2026

No mention of Trisha's? The new Soho gen has lost the plot.

  • Tomi A.·15 Mar 2026

Swift downstairs is so romantic if you're a whisky person, upstairs if you're not. Genius design.

  • Hattie W.·15 Mar 2026

Bocca di Lupo counter is six seats and you have to ring up specifically, worth the call
