Top things to do in San Francisco — week of April 13
A weirdly stacked week in SF: two demo days within blocks of each other, a Great American Music Hall booking I am rearranging plans for, and a Saturday warehouse thing.
Big week. The Y Combinator demo day shockwave hits, plus a separate accelerator demo day across town the same evening, which is going to make Uber surge between SoMa and Hayes Valley extremely funny.
If you want the live filter, the SF this-week page has all of these and the dozen I cut for being too sus.
Monday: low-key, on purpose
A reading group I will not link because the host hates publicity is happening in the Mission. Otherwise it is a quiet Monday.
There is a paid networking thing in the Financial District that I will not name. Avoid.
Tuesday: a coffee, a panel, a choice
Two real options.
- A panel at the Commonwealth Club about regulation of frontier models. Real moderator, real panelists, $20. The questions from the audience are usually better than the panel itself.
- A small Cursor user meetup in SoMa. Twenty-five people, mostly engineers, free. The Cursor team sometimes shows up and sometimes does not. Either way, useful.
I am doing the Cursor one.
Wednesday: Hardware Hackers SF
The single most underrated event in the city. SoMa, free, doors at 6, half the room is soldering and the other half is asking what people are soldering. The robot arm in the corner is functional but I would not put my hand near it.
If you have any hardware project at all, bring it. People love showing each other broken things.
Thursday: demo days everywhere
Y Combinator demo day is invite-only but the spillover is not. There are at least four watch-party events on Luma, ranging from "founder house living room" to "30-person event at a SoMa coworking space with a sponsored bar." I'd skip the sponsored ones.
If you have no interest in YC, the Great American Music Hall booking on Thursday is a touring act with a horn section, $35, doors at 8. Balcony tickets are still the move.
Friday: founder ramen
A small group eats ramen on Folsom every other Friday at 7. No agenda, capped at 8 people, the link goes around in a Telegram I cannot publish. If you find it, you find it. The Mercor and Stripe alums I have eaten with there were unusually thoughtful, which says more about ramen than about either company.
If that's a dead end, the startup events in SF answer page has six other Friday options, three of them free.
Saturday: warehouse, Bayview
A friend is throwing a warehouse thing in Bayview, RSVP-only, $20 cash at the door, runs til 4. The sound system is genuine. Take a Lyft because the walk back to the train at 3am is not a great vibe.
If that is too much, the Independent has a show I have not seperately confirmed but the booking team is solid.
Sunday: hike, then nap
Sunday morning hike meetup at Lands End, 9am, free, just show up. Two miles, slow pace, dogs are encouraged. The post-hike coffee at a place on Clement St is the actual event.
If you want indoor: the Castro Sunday matinee comedy show is reliably weird in the right way.
Eleven things plus the warehouse, twelve total, which gets us back to the editorial mandate. I will be at Hardware Hackers Wednesday and ramen Friday. Say hi if you spot me.
For the comprehensive version including the events I cut for being too overpriced, see the AI events SF answer page.
