Top things to do in Bristol — week of 20 April
A loaded Bristol week — Motion has its proper spring kick-off, Lakota is doing a charity all-nighter, and the Old Crown roast is finally taking outdoor bookings.
Week of the 20th and the calendar has properly woken up. Three nights I would defend hard, one Sunday session that is the sneaky pick of the week, and the Old Crown finally letting people sit outside again.
I am not going to keep telling you about Rifio's Bristol page every week but it does save you flicking between five different sites.
Monday: Old Crown garden, a pint, nothing else
It is finally warm enough. The Old Crown has opened the garden for the season, the beer is good, the chips are great, and you do not need an event in your life every day of the week.
If you really need something organised, the free Bristol meetup list has one Monday entry near Engine Shed.
Tuesday: Strange Brew listening session
Same as ever — record front to back, £8, no chat. This week is a UK garage record I have not heard in twelve years. It is happening.
Wednesday: Free networking at Pithay
Bristol's startup scene runs a Wednesday at Pithay — free, beer fridge, fifteen-minute talks. Two of the founders speaking this week have raised proper money in the last year, so the Q&A should be juicy.
Thursday: Old Crown burger night
Burger and a pint for £12. They have changed the patty supplier and it is alot better than it used to be. Eat early, work the next morning, you are welcome.
Friday: Lakota charity all-nighter
£15, profits go to a Bristol music charity. Three rooms, six hours, a line-up with two names that should have been booking the bigger venue. The cause is real, the music is real, do not skip this one.
Saturday: Motion spring kick-off
This is the one. Three rooms at Motion — main floor is bass, second room is house, the small room is the experimental stuff that is genuinely the most interesting. £22 for eight hours of music. Doors 11pm.
Bring earplugs. The new rig in the main room will rearrange your insides.
Sunday: Strange Brew session, then a long roast
Strange Brew Sunday afternoon listening session is the move. Pints are reasonable, the room is warm, and at 6pm you walk to the Old Crown for a roast having earned it.
The Old Crown roast booking is now opening 14 days out instead of 7, so neccessary to plan ahead. Lamb is still the call.
Save these on Rifio if you want to be sensible about it. The Bristol clubs filter is properly useful for weekend planning.
