Join us for a special film night inside the active restoration site of Willie Herrón’s historic Joaquin Murrieta de Aztlán mural. For a limited time, the mural is standing upright inside the compound as it undergoes restoration before returning home to the Los Angeles Foundation for Legal Aid in East Los Angeles. This is a rare chance to experience the work up close while gathering with artists, historians, and community members helping tell its story.
The evening will feature a screening of Murieta!, the 1965 biographical Western inspired by the legend of Joaquin Murrieta, followed by conversation on the mural’s history, cultural significance, and the ongoing restoration process. We will also screen I Am Joaquin (Yo Soy Joaquin) by Rodolfo “Corky” Gonzales, the landmark Chicano movement poem brought to film, and open a wider discussion about representation, identity, dignity, and justice in both the film and the Chicano cultural imagination.
This event is part of the Somos Joaquin activation series, a month of screenings, readings, workshops, and gatherings honoring the mural and the stories written across the walls of Los Angeles. Come experience this once in a lifetime moment before the mural returns to the LAFLA building.
