We propose a staged reading of the thousand-year-old fable The Animals’ Lawsuit Against Humanity. In this remarkable text, a group of animals brings a legal complaint against humanity, arguing that humans have treated them unjustly and must answer for their actions. Through arguments presented before a court, the animals make a case for their rights and moral consideration.
Written centuries before modern animal rights discourse, the work offers a striking early exploration of ethics, power, and humanity’s relationship with the natural world.
The presentation will take the form of a staged reading, with performers seated and reading from scripts. Distinct vocal characterization will differentiate the animals, human representatives, and the judge, allowing the arguments to emerge clearly without the need for elaborate staging.
Possible discussion prompts:
Imagine yourselves as members of the jinn court. How would you advise the King?
If the animals are right, should they be set free to live according to their own nature?
What might the animals’ arguments suggest about how animals are treated today?
Open to genera audience.
