Held inside our active restoration site of Willie Herrón’s historic Joaquin Murieta de Aztlán mural, this gathering offers a rare opportunity to experience the mural up close while it stands upright inside the compound undergoing restoration before returning home to the Los Angeles Foundation for Legal Aid in East Los Angeles. The evening will include Peter Murrieta’s reading, a live silkscreen activation featuring Willie Herrón’s works, mural + gallery viewing, and time to gather in community around the story, legacy, and cultural significance of Joaquin Murrieta. We will also have Californio barbecue and a curated bar on site, with menu and drink offerings to be shared. Folks are welcome to invite family and friends and come spend time in the space together. Please note: seating is limited. Guests are encouraged to bring their own camping chairs or blankets to be comfortable during the reading and throughout the evening. This event is part of the Somos Joaquin activation series, a month of screenings, readings, workshops, and community gatherings honoring the mural and the stories written across the walls of Los Angeles.
