The Resilient State Route (SR) 37 Program focuses on the 21-mile corridor, which is a vital connector to North Bay communities and plays a critical role in the restoration of the historical San Pablo baylands. SR 37, perched along the edge of San Pablo bay, experiences flooding from winter storms and is vulnerable to sea level rise. These existing and impending threats require big changes and bring the opportunity to building a better SR 37- resilient to climate change, that better serves the public, while also facilitating habitat restoration. Transportation and restoration projects have historically been siloed from each other. The Resilient SR 37 Program seeks to buck that trend. This program represents the first major attempt by transportation and environmental resource/regulatory agencies in the Bay Area to align planning goals, co-develop projects, and reconcile their disparate processes.
Attendees will hear directly from some of the Resilient SR 37 Program partners about how this imperfect but constructive collaboration is re-framing the way projects are delivered to create planning efficiencies, improve project designs, streamline permitting, and expand funding opportunities for multi-benefit shoreline adaptation. Lessons learned from this program can help other Bay Area communities identify ways to accelerate the delivery of adaptation projects that support the long-term health and resilience of natural and built communities and make better use of limited taxpayer dollars.
Presenting Partners: Metropolitan Transportation Commission, California Department of Transportation, Audubon California, San Francisco Bay Regional Water Quality Control Board, and San Francisco Estuary Partnership.
