What’s included: 🖼 Private guided tour of the exhibition 💬 Conversation cards to spark meaningful dialogue 🧭 Facilitated group discussion led by Chibuye Changwe of Art Gallivant About the Exhibition In a moment when the world feels shaken by conflict and uncertainty, the philosopher Edgar Morin reminds us that life remains bearable only if we introduce poetry into it—moments of intensity, celebration, joy, and communion. This is precisely what the prodigious Malick Sidibé offers us. Born in 1935 in the small village of Soloba in Mali, far from Bamako, Sidibé became one of the most important photographers of post-independence Africa. His black-and-white images capture the vibrant youth culture of Bamako in the 1960s and 1970s—moments of dance, fashion, friendship, and freedom. “I am a true witness to the changes that have marked the country. Photography does not lie, at least in black and white,” Sidibé once said. “It is simple, accessible to all, and it tells the story of an era without deception.” Beyond their historical significance, Sidibé’s photographs are deeply poetic. Each frame becomes a celebration of joy, dignity, and beauty. Ten years after his passing, this exhibition brings together more than 40 iconic images, an anthology of gestures, poses, and moments that continue to radiate hope and vitality. About the Artist Malick Sidibé (1935–2016) is one of the most celebrated photographers of the African continent. His work, widely recognised for its joyful portrayal of everyday life in Bamako, captured the optimism and energy of a newly independent Mali. Over the course of his career, Sidibé received numerous international honours. In 2003, he became the first African artist to receive the Hasselblad Award, one of photography’s most prestigious recognitions. In 2007, he was awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Biennale. His work has been exhibited globally and continues to shape the way African photography is understood today, including through the landmark Mali Twist retrospective at the Fondation Cartier pour l’Art Contemporain. Through his images, Sidibé leaves us not only an archive of a time but a lasting celebration of youth, dignity, and cultural pride. ✨ Limited spots. Intimate group.
