The Laboratory AssistantNatalia Loya
Set in 1916 Petrograd amid the final years of the Romanov dynasty, Loya’s historical fiction debut captures a society on the precipice of collapse. The narrative follows Mariya Sokolova, a “fallen, impoverished aristocrat” struggling to sustain her family after her father’s death. Forced from the grueling floor of an industrial shoe factory in search of better wages, Mariya finds an unlikely lifeline as an assistant to Dr. Nikolas Rodin. In a basement laboratory charged with “frenetic, alien energy,” Nikolas pursues a desperate search for a tuberculosis cure, a quest that mirrors the mounting instability of the Russian Empire. Mariya soon realizes that her work in Nikolas’s laboratory carries consequences far beyond the promise of medical progress.Loya’s prose is atmospheric, juxtaposing the “stifled, choked air” of pre-revolutionary Russia with the “beguiling rhythm” of the laboratory. The novel excels in its historical immersion: the inclusion of Mariya’s sister Sofia’s involvement in Bolshevik meetings adds a strong political dimension, and Nikolas’s laboratory functions as a historical microcosm, where the “manic flurry” of scientific discovery mirrors the accelerating collapse of the social order outside. As citywide protests escalate and the military loses control, Mariya and Nikolas’s relationship also becomes a frenzied infatuation that slowly transforms into love, though darkness shadows their future. What is most striking is the novel’s exploration of the uneasy intersection of science and survival. As the pressure to save her family mounts, Mariya is forced to reconcile her morals with the increasingly unsettling nature of Nikolas’s work. She emerges as a resilient protector, assuming the role of the “new head of household,” while Nikolas’s increasingly intense experiments occasionally verge on the surreal and net him astounding results, underscoring the fragile boundary between genius and obsession in moments of national crisis. Readers drawn to historical fiction and gothic medical narratives will find this a compelling read.
