Climate on the Klamath is a full day of expert presentations and panel discussions on the future of energy, environmental law, coastal resilience, aviation, and more. The event kicks off SF Climate Week aboard the Historic Klamath and is hosted by the Bay Area Council, the business association and public policy institute for the San Francisco Bay Area & Silicon Valley.
Join us for our 2 PM panel hosted by the Port of Redwood City: Permitting the Bay’s Future: Permitting Reform for Coastal Resilience
As sea levels rise and storms intensify, the San Francisco Bay must accelerate efforts to protect communities, infrastructure, and ecosystems along its shoreline. Yet many of the projects designed to restore wetlands and build defenses face complex and time-consuming permitting processes that can slow urgently needed work. This panel will explore the regulatory challenges confronting coastal resilience projects and the promising efforts underway to improve how they move from concept to construction.
Panelists will discuss lessons learned from successful process innovations such as the San Francisco Bay Restoration Regulatory Integration Team and the Statewide Restoration Exemption for Restoration Projects, as well as current initiatives like the permitting reform efforts led by the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission. The conversation will also examine how proposed legislation like AB 2051, authored by Buffy Wicks, could help streamline approvals and coordinate agencies to accelerate climate resilience projects across the Bay Area. Attendees will gain insight into what’s working today, what barriers remain, and what policy or process improvements could help the region deliver coastal resilience projects at the scale and speed the climate crisis demands.
Speakers:- Kristine Zortman, Executive Director, Port of Redwood City (Moderator)- Len Materman, Chief Executive Officer, OneShoreline- Laura Tam, Chief Executive Officer, Bay Planning Coalition- Larry Goldzband, Executive Director, San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission
Attendees are encouraged to stay for the full day of programming, capped with a reception sponsored by our presenting sponsor Alaska Airlines, along with Farella Braun + Martel, Ramboll, the Port of Redwood City, Stanford University, and PG&E.
