Conscious Kitchen will host an organic school lunch, educational programming, and farmers market demonstrating how institutional school food procurement can serve as a powerful lever for climate mitigation.
Schools are the largest restaurant system in the country. In California alone, schools serve more than 5 million breakfasts and lunches every school day, and manage a roughly $4.8 billion budget that can be invested into climate‑smart agriculture. When districts shift purchasing toward fresh, local, organic ingredients, they reduce reliance on synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, support soil health and carbon sequestration, strengthen regional supply chains, and increase economic viability for small and mid-scale farms. Local organic procurement is climate action at scale.
This event will bring together local organic farmers, school food leaders, policymakers, and community partners to showcase a functioning farm-to-school ecosystem. Attendees will experience a thoughtfully prepared organic school meal and engage directly with the producers growing the food, as well as the food service teams responsible for nourishing the next generation of young leaders –– illustrating how values-aligned purchasing can simultaneously nourish students, support farmer resilience, and conserve the planet.
By supporting organic agriculture and institutional buying power, this gathering positions public schools as critical actors in advancing climate resilience, regenerative agriculture, and community-centered food systems.
