The 10 best dating spots in Paris that aren't the obvious clichés
Claire Laurent ranks ten Paris dating spots that aren't the Eiffel Tower or a tourist boat — bistros, listening bars, gardens, museums and one wine cave that does the job properly.
Paris is a city where the dating clichés are real — the Eiffel Tower at sunset, the boat on the Seine, the picnic at Trocadéro — and they all also happen to be terrible date plans. Crowded, predictable, and exactly the wrong signal. The list below is what I actually point friends at when they ask "where can I take someone in Paris that won't make me look unimaginative."
The first-date wine cave
Septime La Cave in the 11th is the answer to most first-date logistics in Paris. Low light, narrow tables, the by-the-glass list is genuinly chosen properly, and the room hums in a way that makes conversation easier rather than harder. Walk-in usually works on a weekday. If it's full, walk five minutes to one of the other caves on rue de Charonne — the area is dense with the same idea executed at slightly different price points.
The proper bistro options
For third-date-plus, you go to Le Baratin in Belleville. Small, loved, the food is the actual reason and the room makes you sit close. Book ahead, the place is famous for being unflashy and that's the point.
Le Servan in the 11th is the slightly more energetic sibling — book a corner, the cooking is precise, the wine list is real, the room is alive without being loud. Use it for the date where you want to demonstrate you have taste without being a show-off.
The day-time routes
Hardware Société in Montmartre is brunch-into-coffee dating done well — light, unpretentious, the kind of place where conversation has space. Walk-in usually fine. Use it for the daytime date that doesn't commit to anything heavier.
Café de la Nouvelle Mairie in a quiet pocket of the 5th is the wine bar version of the same idea — daytime, garden tables in spring, real wines by the glass, locals only. Walk-in, low pressure, the right energy for a first or second.
The unexpected indoor pick
Musée de la Vie Romantique in the 9th is a small museum, free to enter, with a garden cafe in the back that most people don't know exists. Daytime date plan that makes itself, especially in spring. The walk up to it from Saint-Georges is part of the experience.
The cocktail option
Le Mary Celeste in the 3rd is a cocktail bar that takes itself seriously without being annoying. The bar seats are the play — easier than a bistro for a casual second date, and the food is genuinly good if you want to anchor it. Book ahead on weekends.
The walking date that works
Promenade Plantée in the 12th is the elevated park above Bastille, walkable end-to-end in around forty-five minutes, with cafes and stops along the route. A walking date that's actually pleasant — most walking dates in Paris drift into the wrong neighbourhoods or end up at a packed terrace, this one stays interesting.
The variety pick
La Fine Mousse in the 11th is a beer bar that takes its list seriously without being preachy about it. Different from the wine route, a useful option when you want variety or you've gone wine-cave on the previous two dates. Walk-in fine, conversation-friendly.
The atmospheric finish
Hôtel Particulier Montmartre is the hidden cocktail bar — the walk to find it is part of the date, the room is properly atmospheric, the cocktails are well-made and reasonably priced for what it is. Book ahead, especially weekends. Use it for the date where you want to end strongly.
How to use this list
A useful sequence: wine cave first, bistro second, cocktail bar third, walking date fourth. Don't try to do all of them in three weeks — the right pace is one new spot per week and let the conversation tell you which to repeat. Recieve any suggestions from your date with grace, even the cliché ones; sometimes the cliché is the cliché because it works.
For an event-anchored date — a gallery opening, a small gig, a talk worth turning up to — the Paris this-week page lists what's on and lets you pair it with one of the spots above. The "drink first, event after" plan does alot of work in this city.
What I've left off
Anywhere with a queue. Anywhere on a tourist street that isn't on this list for a specific reason. Any restaurant that takes itself too seriously to talk in. The ten above are the ones I keep going back to, in 2026, for the reasons listed.
